Today is All Saints Day, the day on the Church calendar on which we celebrate the great cloud of witnesses that have gone before us.
How much do you know about the history of the saints?
For All Saints Day, we offer the following history of the church in twenty biographies , of one saint from each century from the first century to the twentieth century. (It’s too early to choose a saint to celebrate from the twenty-first century.) With each we offer a brief snippet of their lives, and a biography of each, most of which can be downloaded for FREE. Many of these saints lives and work intersect with those who went before them, and what emerges as we dig into these stories is a fuller and richer history of God’s presence and work among the people of God throughout the full span of our history.
Eighteenth Century:
John WoolmanJohn Woolman (October 1720 – October 7, 1772) was a North American merchant, tailor, journalist, and itinerant Quaker preacher, and an early abolitionist in the colonial era. Based in Mount Holly, New Jersey, near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he traveled through frontier areas of British North America to preach Quaker beliefs, and advocate against slavery and the slave trade, cruelty to animals, economic injustices and oppression, and conscription. Beginning in 1755 with the outbreak of the French and Indian War, he urged tax resistance to deny support to the military. In 1772, Woolman traveled to England, where he urged Quakers to support abolition of slavery. (via Wikipedia) |

Therese of LisieuxSaint Thérèse of Lisieux, born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin (2 January 1873 – 30 September 1897), also known as Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, O.C.D., was a French Catholic Discalced Carmelite nun who is widely venerated in modern times. She is popularly known as “The Little Flower of Jesus”, or simply “The Little Flower.” Thérèse has been a highly influential model of sanctity for Catholics and for others because of the simplicity and practicality of her approach to the spiritual life.
