While it might come as a surprise to some, anyone who has read the biblical story should know that Jesus made disciples while both he and they were on a mission together. Jesus’s mission was the integral and indispensable context in which his disciples were formed. The same holds true today for us. Spirituality and discipleship go hand in glove and must be road-tested. Of course, the Church often misses or simply ignores this point, thinking that disciples can be made without actually following Jesus into the world. This is cognitive and spiritual dissonance of the highest order. Spirituality, discipleship, and mission are inseparable. The good news is that an increasing number of Christians are being motivated to deal with the dissonance by a change of attitude, beliefs, and action, after being awakened to recognize the situation through the efforts of a host of recent books, including Missional Spirituality.
