2024 Festival of Faith and Writing – Pre-Reading Guide

In order to prime and prepare ourselves for this conference, we have put together a pre-reading guide that includes some of our favorite authors who will be at the conference, including their anticipated topics of discussion.

JEMAR TISBY

Jemar Tisby is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, The Color of Compromise: The Truth about the Church’s Complicity in Racism, and How to Fight Racism. His latest book is How to Fight Racism: Young Reader’s Edition. Jemar has been a co-host of the “Pass the Mic” podcast since its inception seven years ago. His writing has been featured in The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The New York Times among others. He is a frequent commentator on outlets such as NPR and CNN’s New Day program. He speaks nationwide on the topics of racial justice, U.S. history and Christianity. Jemar earned his PhD in history and he studies race, religion, and social movements in the 20th century. Tisby’s talk will focus on his 2021 book, How to Fight Racism.

DANIEL BOWMAN, JR.

Daniel Bowman, Jr. is the author of A Plum Tree in Leatherstocking Country and On the Spectrum: Autism, Faith, & the Gifts of Neurodiversity.

His work has appeared in several anthologies and in The Adirondack Review, American Poetry Journal, Art House America, Books & Culture, Cha: An Asian Literary Journal, The Cresset, Christianity Today, Image Journal’s Good Letters, The Midwest Quarterly, The Northern Agrarian, The Other Journal, Pyrta, Rio Grande Review, Saint Katherine Review, Seneca Review, Volume 1 Brooklyn, and many other journals.

A New York native, he lives in Hartford City, Indiana, where he is Associate Professor of English at Taylor University, Editor-in-Chief of Relief: A Journal of Art & Faith, and faculty advisor to Students for Education on Neurodiversity (SEND).

At FFW2024:

Bowman will discuss neurodivergence, how it informs literature, and why learning from autistic artists is important.

CHANEQUA WALKER-BARNES

Chanequa Walker-Barnes, Ph.D., is a prominent scholar, theologian, and author, known for her thought-provoking work on racial justice and spirituality. With a deep commitment to social change, she combines her expertise in clinical psychology and theology to tackle issues of systemic oppression, cultural trauma, and their impact on individuals and society. Through her research, writing, and speaking, Dr. Chanequa strives to inspire others to transformative social action and wholistic self-care.

A professor at Columbia Theological Seminary, she has authored three books – Sacred Self-Care, I Bring the Voices of My People, and Too Heavy a Yoke. Her faith has been shaped by Methodist, Baptist, and evangelical social justice communities as well as by Buddhism and Islam. In her thirty years in higher education, she has been a Hurricane (U. Miami), Gator (U. Florida), Tar Heel (UNC-Chapel Hill), and Blue Devil (Duke). Yet somehow, she is still not a sports fan.

Chanequa Walker-Barnes  will discuss how the writing of Black women about gender and race is important for everyone to learn.

MEGHAN O’GIEBLYN

Meghan O’Gieblyn is the author of God, Human, Animal, Machine and Interior States, which won the 2018 Believer Book Award for nonfiction. She writes essays, features, and criticism for Harper’s Magazine, The New Yorker, n+1, The Point, The Baffler, The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, The New York Times, and other publications. She is the recipient of three Pushcart Prizes and the 2023 Benjamin H. Danks Award from American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work has been anthologized in The Best American Essays (2017) and The Contemporary American Essay (2021). She writes the “Cloud Support” advice column for Wired and has taught creative nonfiction workshops since 2012. She lives in Madison, Wisconsin.

At FFW2024:

O’Gieblyn will have a conversation with Sarah Smarsh, where they will explore stories that come from often overlooked communities.
