Elegy
Joel Kurz
I am the rose of Sharon
and the lily of the valleys;
as the lily among thorns,
so is my love among the daughters.
(Song of Songs 2:1-2)
Although she lay as cut and withered,
vigor’s form long faded from her limbs
and visage, arrayed is she in glory’s splendor,
bidding death come sweetly on beyond
this soil well-spent and harrowed.
Her breath departs, her bones await
being bound in life once more—
Susan, lily of the resurrection,
commends her spirit to the Lord.
