By Maurice Manning

Hardback: HMH Books

Manning is an astute observer of both the natural world and the befuddled and glorious human beings who inhabit it. In the author photo on the back flap of the book, he sits next to a sign that reads “This Place Matters,” and his poetry treats location as a thing that does indeed matter. The Gone and the Going Away is filled with vivid descriptions of Kentucky and Kentuckians specific enough to make the rest of us feel like outsiders, but loving and detailed enough to make us feel that we have appreciated the things he loves, even if we don’t exactly understand them. (Michial Farmer)
