Ada Limón Poems – Five of our Favorites by the Former US Poet Laureate

Ada Limón Poems

We’re continuing on with our National Poetry Month celebration! Each day, we’ve highlighted another American poet and shared a few of our favorite poems. Today’s we feature the poems of Ada Limón.

Ada Limón (b. March 28, 1976) is a Mexican-American poet who served two terms as the U.S. Poet Laureate, from 2022-2023 and 2023-2024. During that time, she focused on connecting poetry to the natural world. In cooperation with the National Park Service, the project “You are Here: Poetry in Parks” installed picnic tables in several national parks and asked visitors to consider, “What would you write in response to the landscape around you?”

As poet laureate, Limón wrote a poem called “In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa,” which was inscribed on the Europa spacecraft. This poem was also adapted into a picture book, illustrated by Peter Sís.

Her poetry often explores topics like marriage, infertility, motherhood, feminism, and life with chronic injury/illness. Sound and rhythm are important in her poetry, and much of it is excellent when read aloud.

For about a year beginning in 2022, Limón was the host of the daily poetry podcast, The Slowdown, created by Tracy K. Smith. Listen to episodes with Limón beginning here.

with black expansiveness, we point
to the planets we know, we

pin quick wishes on stars. From earth,
we read the sky as if it is an unerring book
of the universe, expert and evident….
