C. Christopher Smith (founding editor of the ERB) spoke with first-time podcast guest (and one of our most-frequently mentioned writers!) Kathleen Norris and returning guest Amy Julia Becker, regarding some common themes in their published writing. They speak about disability, what it means to be human, and their experiences accompanying family members with disabilities. Their conversation is humble, sincere, vulnerable and light-hearted, and listeners will find their honest reflections encouraging.
Kathleen Norris is the award-winning poet, writer, and author of the New York Times bestsellers The Cloister Walk, Amazing Grace, and Dakota: A Spiritual Geography, and Acedia & Me. A Benedictine oblate of Assumption Abbey for the past 30 years, Norris divides her time between Hawaii and South Dakota. Her book Acedia & Me was the Englewood Review’s very first book of the year, back in 2008. Amy Julia Becker helps people reimagine the good life through her writing and speaking on disability, faith, and culture. She is the author of multiple books including A Good and Perfect Gift, which we will discuss here and is the creator of the Reimagining Family Life with Disability workshop. She is a guest opinion writer for national publications and hosts two podcasts: Reimagining the Good Life and Take the Next Step. Becker is a graduate of Princeton University and Princeton Theological Seminary (MDiv). She lives with her husband and their three children in western Connecticut.
