Francis Chan’s newest project is a series of seven DVD’s called BASIC, the purpose of which is to help us shift our mindset from “going to church” to “being the church.” And indeed, this change is a necessary and an urgent one. However, the story of how we have come to the mindset of “going to church” in the first place is a complex one that unfolds over many centuries. So, I’ll admit I’m a bit skeptical from the outset about how much of this deep and complicated story can really be unraveled over the course of seven, brief (15 minute) videos. The first of these videos, entitled Fear God is now available, and in light of my stated skepticism, I wish I could have seen more of the videos to provide some additional context for understanding this first DVD in light of the overall project. Chan’s message is clear, simple and well-done, navigating the tension between “fearing God” and not being afraid. Chan’s talk is complemented by a visual story that does a decent job of illustrating his point (I’ll leave the details of this footage as a surprise.) The production of the DVD is top notch, and in watching the “Behind the Scenes” extra segment on the DVD, we see the great lengths that were taken to produce the desired imagery. Suffice it to say that after watching the “Behind the Scenes” segment, I completely understand why this little fifteen minute DVD is selling for a whopping $14.99! And speaking of pricing, it wasn’t clear to me whether this DVD was intended to be purchased by individuals or groups. The pricetag on the DVD would seem to indicate that it was intended for groups, but yet the DVD comes with a single guide for “personal reflection” which would seem to indicate that it is intended for individuals.
Overall, Francis Chan’s message is worth our consideration and discussion, especially within the stated objective of the larger “Basic” film series, but given this objective – and the somewhat hefty pricetag – I would recommend watching and reflecting on it as group (church, small group, etc.), not as an individual.
