“Leong’s Race and Place: How Urban Geography Shapes the Journey to Reconciliation is one of the more theologically astute books on race and reconciliation in urban contexts. Like many authors grounded in the philosophy of Christian Community Development, Leong traces the sociological history of the American metropolis through industrialization, FHA loans, redlining, white flight, suburbanization, deindustrialization, the creation of the “ghetto,” gentrification, and displacement of people trapped in poverty. He provides practical guidelines for Christian communities striving for economic justice in the midst of the convoluted dynamics left in the wake of this history. In contrast to many urban ministry books that are rooted in the concepts of “incarnational” ministry or “missional” living, Leong’s comparatively rigorous account adds an oft-overlooked theological category: the significance of place. “
