The idea of legacy functions as the organizing paradigm for Sarah Arthur’s recent meditative biography, A Light So Lovely. Arthur is less interested in constructing a comprehensive narrative than in expanding our gaze beyond L’Engle’s own life to the concentric rings of those she inspired. She models this by situating herself within L’Engle’s legacy, reminiscing on the importance of both L’Engle’s writings and personal encounters. “She insisted on inscribing the book with my whole name, first and last,” Arthur remembers of a book-signing at Wheaton College (26). As a former youth pastor and seminary graduate, Arthur now balances the work of writing and mothering young children. Her previous ten books, mostly prayer guides and devotionals, are all situated along the porous border of  literature and theology. Both this balance, and this border, were
deeply familiar to L’Engle.

Arthur’s prose ripples through a host of anecdotes collected from L’Engle’s own memoirs, as well as interviews with poet Luci Shaw, artist Makoto
Fujimura, L’Engle’s granddaughter Charlotte, and many others. This outward motion finally extends to us, the readers. We are invited to locate ourselves within this unfolding legacy, and to consider how L’Engle’s life might be relevant to our particular cultural moment.
