ERB Editor C. Christopher Smith sat down with Josh Harper and Lowell Bliss at Urbana for a thoughtful and impassioned conversation about Christianity and creation care, as well as their work, and what they’re reading.
Josh Harper lives with his wife and two daughters on the unceded land of the Ohlone people, in Oakland, Ca. He oversees Ecological Discipleship and Via Divina for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Josh is the proud caretaker of several thousand “pet” worms that eat his garbage. He is an avid cyclist and when faced with the choice will always choose to ride the hills. Lowell Bliss is the director of Eden Vigil, an environmental missions organization launched by Christar in 2009. Lowell led the writing team for the Lausanne Global Consultation on Creation Care and the Gospel “Call to Action” and is one of the few evangelical Climate Leaders with the Climate Reality Project. He and his wife, Robynn, were church planting missionaries for fourteen years in India and Pakistan. They now reside with their three children in the tallgrass prairie ecosystem of Kansas.
EPISODE SPONSOR:
The psalmist writes in Psalm 42:7 that “deep calls unto deep.” Sam D. Kim in A Holy Haunting suggests that many confuse this deep longing with a form of chronic anxiety, or something that has gone wrong, when it is in fact a holy haunting of the presence of God. Deep calling unto deep is nothing other than the voice of God echoing from eternity. Perhaps our culture’s current crushing opioid crisis, mental health epidemic, and the rise of Tinder are all manifestations of this holy haunting gone horribly wrong—clear residual evidence of not only the existence, but its prevalence in human experience.
