It’s a common occurrence in our house—over breakfast, my husband Robert will say, “Well, this morning’s EnneaThought email was another head-scratcher.” Many Enneagram aficionados will know what I’m talking about: the Enneagram Institute sends a daily email, as short as a fortune cookie, and you can sign up based on one of the nine Enneagram personality types.

Some of these emails are so perceptive that they land with a convicting blow, which has made them the topic of much kvetching among friends. (Many of us have wished they were sent at some benign hour in the middle of the day, rather than wake up to them first thing in the morning.) Other EnneaThoughts are impenetrable, with references to divine essence and holy wisdom. It is these that my husband finds eye-rollingly puzzling.

I have been reading Thomas Merton’s New Seeds of Contemplation for almost a year now. Slowly wading through the wisdom of this Trappist monk, it’s as if I’ve learned a new language for understanding familiar truths.  Even though it’s taken me awhile to get only halfway through the book, and even though I am still unsure as to what contemplation actually is, the concepts of the true self, contemplative prayer, and Christian mysticism resonate deeply.

It’s a common narrative: It’s always going to be someone else, it’s not going to be me.

Clergy burnout may be high, but I was never going to fall into that category I told myself. I naively thought with proper preparation I would be able to avoid the statistics and perhaps help change the narrative. And then it came. I rapidly descended like an Apple iPhone into the lower-power mode to conserve energy several years ago. It was in the midst of this descent I was introduced to the enneagram for the first time. A colleague and friend suggested I check it out.
